    IELTS Test Format

The IELTS test assesses a candidate’s abilities on four different parameters: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

There are two modules of the IELTS test:

    1. Academic
    2. General

Format of exam for listening and speaking are same for both the modules. However, the formats of the Reading and Writing section are different in both the tests.

Mostly, test for Listening, Reading, and Writing tests are on the same day with no break during the test. While test for Speaking is either before or after one week of the test date for rest of three skills.

Duration for the LRW (Listening, Reading, and Writing) test is 2 hours and 45 minutes while Speaking test lasts for 11-14 minutes.

    IELTS Exam Scores and Result

    IELTS Score

Now is the moment to await the results of the IELTS test. Less than two weeks will pass before the results are made public. Visit the British Council’s or the IDP’s official websites to learn the results. A candidate’s IELTS score for each of the four sections will be assigned on a scale from 1 to 9. They will also receive their overall band score in addition to that. Candidates need to understand their band IELTS score. In this post, we’ll also go over how IELTS band scores are calculated. For a thorough explanation of how the scoring system operates, see the IELTS Band Scores page.

    IELTS Score Validity

After completing the examination, candidates get their results in five to seven days. Conversely, the offline method may require up to 13 days.

Moreover, an individual’s IELTS results are valid for two years following their administration.

The two-year validity limit on IELTS scores is intended to ensure that the originality of the data is maintained. The knowledge of candidates may be compromised by extended time validity because people forget things with time.

    IELTS Band Score

Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are the four sections that make up the IELTS exam. A component’s contribution to the total IELTS band score is 25% for each. Consequently, every component holds equal significance.

Band scores are used to evaluate the exam; a score between 0 and 9 indicates a student’s proficiency in English. After taking the test, students will receive band scores for each section as well as a total band score. For example, a candidate with a band score of 6 is considered skilled. The learner has a solid command of the English language in spite of a few errors and misunderstandings.

    Skill Level Band Score Description
Expert 9 Correct and appropriate mastery of the language
Very good 8 With a few minor hiccups, you have complete command of the English language.
Good 7 Operational command of the language, with errors in certain portions
Competent 6 Language proficiency is demonstrated by a practical understanding of the language. Good command of a complicated language
Modest 5 In most instances, partial language command and coping skills are required.

Extremely limited 3 Only general connotations are understood. Faces recurring communication breakdowns

    IELTS Reading Band Score

There are 40 questions on the IELTS reading exam. You’ll get one mark if you answer a question correctly. A candidate can receive a maximum score of 40 and a minimum score of 0. The IELTS band scale is created using the applicants’ marks.

The two reading test sections are the Academic Reading Test and the General Training Reading Test.

Compared to the General Training Reading Test, the IELTS academic reading exam has a greater vocabulary level and a more complex style. To get a high band score on the General Training Reading Test, more questions must be answered correctly than on the Academic Reading Test.

    IELTS Speaking Band Score

There are three sections in the IELTS Speaking Test. During the four to five minute first portion, the examiner will ask you general questions about your education, family, work, and other topics. You will receive a card to discuss a specific subject in part 2. You will talk for two minutes, giving yourself a minute to think things through. The material covered in Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test is expanded upon in Part 3, when you will be asked to describe more abstract ideas and subjects.

IELTS examiners employ particular evaluation criteria in the speaking category to characterise your performance parameters. Their names are

    1. Coherence and fluency
    2. Lexical Reference
    3. Pronunciation
    4. Range, and Grammatical Accuracy

    IELTS Writing Band Score

There are two tasks on the IELTS Writing exam for the Academic and General Training writing sections. On a scale of 0 to 9, each task is given a unique grade; task 2 is given a higher weight than task 1. In the first assignment of the IELTS Academic writing test, you will need to summarize the data that has been given to you in the form of a graph, diagram, chart, or table. You have to write an essay for Task 2 in response to a position or argument.

In the first assignment of the IELTS General Training Writing Test, you will be required to evaluate a situation and compose a letter outlining the facts. For Task 2 of the IELTS General Training Writing Test, you have to write an essay in response to a problem, issue, or viewpoint. A high band on the writing test requires meeting certain evaluation requirements. The average of these scores determines the band score that is given.

    The following are the criteria:

    1. Task Completion (Task 1)/Task Response (Task 2)
    2. Cohesion and cohesiveness
    3. Grammatical Range and
    4. Accuracy of Lexical Resources
